Benagil Cave

You simply must see the sandstone cave, also known as Gruta de Benagil. Sea cave Benagil is a natural gem of Portugal, which is reflected in the number of tourists who visit the cave each year. The Algarve region is the most visited part of Portugal, and it's no wonder with the bizarre sandstone formations everywhere you look. Benagil is located in the village of the same name near the town of Lagoa.

How to get to the cave?

The easiest access is from above to the upper edge of the cave, from where you can look into the bottom of the sea cave and observe the crashing waves of the Atlantic. During low tide, Benagil is only flooded at the entrance and offers the opportunity to walk on the beach inside the cave, but you need to rent kayak or a low-draft boat, swimming into the cave is prohibited.

Trips by fast motorboat are regularly organized to the entrance of the cave, and it is truly an experience you won't forget. Benagil might not have been the biggest experience we had that day.

If you decide to book a boat trip, get ready for an adrenaline-packed ride. The highlight was entering a narrow cave amidst giant waves, the captain's skill was astounding. Besides the views of cliffs and caves, you will experience a fast ride in the Atlantic waves, huge jumps, and some crazy tilts at the boat's limit. Of course, it depends on how experienced your captain is and what the composition of the crew will be, which will correspondingly affect the level of adrenaline.

You can find a video from the ride on our YouTube channel. Read about our journey along the west coast of Portugal on a fishing trip called Fisherman´s trail.
